Happy Wednesday!
It's been a busy day in Grade 5 today! Miss Peters (our MRU student teacher) was with us this morning. She helped us with reading, the beginnings of our "I Am" poems and she led our gym class with a game of Swamp ball. Mrs.Ferrari worked with our class to teach them different techniques with watercolors. We learned about wet on dry, dry on dry and wet on wet. She also talked about perspective and gave us tips to create our landscapes. Check out some of our experimentations in the photos below! We took our Fun Lunches off to the ridge and spent the afternoon with Ms. Hammond exploring the pond for our wetlands study. Many thanks to the parents who were able to help us today! *Reminders... Remember to spend some time each night reading! (At least 20 minutes!) Friday is Orange Shirt day. Happy Tuesday!
This morning, we had a mini-lesson on capitalization. We will work to apply these lessons into our daily writing! We watched a video on "Orange Shirt Day" and reflected on "Orange Shirt Day" with the following discussion questions: Link: http://www.orangeshirtday.org Orange Shirt Day Please reflect on the following questions in your Sketchbook. Reflection Questions: 1. What is the origin of Orange Shirt day? 2. What is your immediate reaction to this? 3. What do you take away (learn) from watching this video? Homework: Please ensure your Sketchbook page is completed for tomorrow! Remember, we are striving for quality of work not quickness! In Social Studies, we discussed some of the major bodies of water in Canada, including the Hudson Bay, and the Great Lakes. We used a memory strategy (Super Man Helps Every One) to help us remember the Great Lakes... S=Superior, M=Michigan, H= Huron, E = Erie and O = Ontario). This also helps us locate the lakes from west to east. In Physical Education, we have been learning a variety of different games, including compound games, tag games, and cooperative games. We've been fortunate to have such great weather to allow us for plenty of outdoor time! IMPORTANT REMINDER: Fish Creek Walking Field Trip tomorrow!!! *Parents, an email was sent out yesterday in regards to our afternoon field trip to Fish Creek Park for our Wetlands science unit. Students will bring their Fun Lunch with them, as they will have a picnic style lunch on the ridge and then venture into the park to visit the nearby pond in Fish Creek. (If you child did not order Fun Lunch, please ensure they bring a bagged lunch with them.) Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather and brings a water bottle with them. Happy Monday!
We had a great start to the week! This morning, we revisited our discussion on the executive functions, with a focus on FOCUS:) Ask us what focus looks like and tools/strategies that we can use to help us! We completed a sketch page on this. We also met "The Biscotti Kid!" :) We had many "Biscotti Kids" in our class this morning! Our kiddos handled our first fire drill practice extremely well! Great job, group! We had a chance to read "Trapped in Ice" this morning. "Mother" found out who the captain of the Karluk really was...! We have been working on making connections and visualizing. We googled a picture of Mr.Stefansson... he wasn't quite the way most of us had visualized him! Canada Map: We continue to work on learning the geography of Canada, including provinces and capital cities. A Look Ahead: Friday is Orange Shirt Day...Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Happy Wednesday! (... and yes, I can say Wednesday, today... thanks for my grade 5 detectives who are reading the blog and correcting me:))...
We welcomed a Mount Royal student teacher into our classroom today... Miss Peters. Miss Peters will be with our class on Wednesday mornings. She has a specialty in gym and health! We look forward to having her with us as she will be a wonderful addition! This morning we spent some time on the geography of Canada. We pre-assessed ourselves by seeing if we could draw a map of Canada by memory! Not an easy task! We were all successful in our own way and I was really impressed with what the students came up with! We worked on learning the provinces and their capital cities. We continue to discuss FOCUS and what focus looks like in the classroom. We're becoming more aware and are able to use the class timer to help us monitor ourselves! Reminders: *Parents, please sign up (or re-sign up) for Healthy Hunger for Fun Lunches! *Meet the Teacher Conference begin tomorrow and Friday *Come have a look at the Book Fair during conferences *Milk program notice coming home today *Fee Agreement notice coming home today Happy Wednesday! We had the opportunity to have Mrs.Purkiss visit our class this morning to discuss with us the transition from summer to school and how we need to change our thinking from me to we:) The kids brainstormed classroom actions that they see as "me" and "we." We are working towards making the best decisions to support our classroom needs. (See photos below) *Students, please make sure you know your home address, including postal code! If you are not sure, be sure to write it down and bring it to school tomorrow! *Reminders: -Be sure to book "Meet the Teacher Conferences" -Book Fair will be on during conferences Happy Monday!
It sounds like everyone had a good weekend (minus some illnesses!) Students, remember to get a good sleep, eat healthy and wash your hands to help keep those "little bugs" away! We are working on developing cognitive reading strategies. This morning we worked on making connections including text to self, text to text and text to world with our read aloud, "Trapped In Ice." We also discussed the importance of returning homework that is due, to create a good homework habit. Any students who did not hand their letters in (Letter to my future self), need to ensure they are handed in tomorrow. In Social Studies, we started brainstorming about what we already know about Canada! *There was a patrol meeting this afternoon. Patrol shifts start tomorrow! *Immunization Forms were due today! If you haven't already returned your form, please return it tomorrow. *We're looking forward to meeting everyone for "Meet the Teacher" Conferences! *Book Fair is open during conferences! Come check it out! *Happy Thursday!
Stay dry everyone! This morning, we started our class read aloud "Trapped in Ice" by Eric Walters. The story is about the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913. I wonder who will remember our "bonus points" conversation, and will be able to tell us the names of the Canadian regions tomorrow;)! *Following Directions: Parents, ask your child about this! What did they learn today about following directions! *We started to write a letter today to our future selves... (our 10 months from now future selves...) We will continue working on these tomorrow! *We all looked fabulous for picture day! *Please remember to return all forms asap, including immunization forms! Today, we continued to discuss our "I Am" question and chose from our brainstorm webs, two to three of the most powerful words that describe who we are. We wrote short summaries about the books we read in IR and discussed how we could interpret the genre of the book. We also started to talk about the importance of writing and "what successful writers do."
Reminders for tomorrow: *Tomorrow is Picture Day! Bring your best smile! *Please return immunization forms that were handed out today *Parents, please sign up for Meet the Teacher Conferences Happy Tuesday!
