Parents/Students, Please re-read the information sheets regarding next week's Field Trip to Ann and Sandy Cross. We will be spending the majority of the day outside, so please ensure proper footwear and clothing. Be prepared for rain, snow, mud and muck! :)
Welcome back! It was great to see the kids and catch up on their week away from school! We have a busy three months ahead of us. Today, we discussed our Writing Provincial Exam and had a look at the Narrative Scoring rubric. We used our own stories to self-reflect and self-assess our own work using this guide. Mrs.Warrener will return our marks tomorrow! Tomorrow we will be practicing narrative writing with a time frame. Students will be able to practice with laptops if they choose.

Please also note that April 3 is Good Friday (there is no school) and there is also no school for students Monday, April 5 which is a PD day for teachers.
Thank you to the Grade Ones for hosting Bust-A-Move Disco Day. Today was our last day with Mrs.Carole. We are finishing up our Printmaking and Sand Painting. We look forward to sharing our masterpieces with our parents! Happy Spring Break! See you March 30! Happy St.Patrick's Day!
*It was another busy day! We had an Irish Dance group present to us this morning, including a few of our own POW students! We continued to work on identifying poetic devices for Poetry. Also, we have gotten further on a consensus for our Wampum Belts. We spent the first part of the afternoon putting together our mugs for our "Stuff A Mug." When we first set out to collect donations for those in need, we thought we would aim to stuff 30 mugs (about one mug each) to donate to CUPS. We are thankful for all the donations! Our final count was 81mugs. When we ran out of mugs we stuffed ziploc bags! Our final count was 138 stuffed mugs and bags! Wow! Way to go Grade 6 and all those who helped! *Overdue Work: I am still waiting on OVERDUE work for Graphic Novels and Fiction stories. *We will have a guest speaker in tomorrow (one of our Dad's!) to speak to the class about his social media campaign "In It Together" that connects to our service project. *Reminder that Thursday is Grade One Spirit Day - Bust a Move! *Please note that Thursday is the last day of classes before Spring Break! Happy Weekend! You've worked hard all week! Enjoy the sunshine and the outdoors! Some of us are bringing home homework for the weekend. All Graphic Novels and Narrative Stories were due today. If these were not handed in, I'll expect them Monday morning (bright and early:)!)
We have one more day of collections for our "Stuff A Mug!" It's been wonderful to see how involved some of our other classes have gotten! Great work Gr.6! We're also super pleased with the first edit of our own video! Hopefully, next week we can decide on the music! We took a look at Exam Bank today. This is a site that allows us to practice for our Provincial Exams at the end of the year. We took a look at reading comprehension examples and strategies this morning. **IMPORTANT** Parents, Please fill out ALL THE WHITE FORMS for our FIELD TRIP and RETURN BY TUESDAY! It is important that this is done on time! Mrs.Hammond, Mrs.Warrener & Mr.Gardner had another visit to the site yesterday evening. We are looking forward to being able to offer these kids this experience! Once again, a big thanks to our volunteers! *Also, the Grade Ones will be hosting our next Spirit Day Thursday. Look for information on their "Bust-a-Move!" The class started to put into practice how decision making was made within the Iroquois Confederacy. Each student was assigned one of the 6 nations and experienced how it would feel to take part in a meeting where individuals needed to come to a consensus. We have two more days of Mission Impossible left. Today we analyzed our "Cardboard Stories" video clip to make decisions about how we want to film our own Grade 6 Video raising awareness on homelessness. At this point, the Grade 6s have brought in 34 travel mugs and 73 pairs of socks, as well as granola bars and toiletries. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who has donated. We will continue to accept donations until Monday. The students have decided to invite other classes to participate in this service project.

Today we learned more about the decision making process of the Iroquois and started to make our own "Wampum belts" (bracelets). Mission Impossible started today in Gym. We will be continuing this for the rest of the week. Please remember there is a Patrol Meeting tomorrow at lunch. We started discussing ideas for making our video on Rethinking Homelessness. *We continue to converse about how to help those in need, in particular the homeless in Calgary. Here is the link to an inspiring video we viewed today. Check it out! http://www.upworthy.com/a-customer-walked-into-his-pizza-shop-and-changed-philadelphia-with-1-and-a-single-post-it-note We continue to accept donations! Thanks to those who have already donated! *Once again, thank you to those parents able to join us for our April Field Trip. Mr. Gardner continued to discuss the Iroquois society today with the class. In particular, they started looking at the role of women in the Iroquois society and comparing this to the role of women in Ancient Athens.
We continue to work on our narrative writing and developing fiction stories. Mr.Gardner introduced the kids to Poetry this morning using a powerful Macklemore video, which tied into our class discussions on homelessness and introduced the ideas of materialism/overconsumption. When asked what they thought poetry was, some of the responses were: *poetry is like painting *inspiration *thoughts and opinions *the story of life *like a song *a rap *3-5 minute comment, or thought *inspiring message *vents your feelings *can be healing *reflection *poetry can take up any form *poetry is an art and some people need to go through a strong emotion to express it *remind people about things, express yourself *you could paint music or a poem *art is poetry *Parents/Students... Please remember to donate to our "Stuff A Mug!" Donation items are listed in previous blog. Thank you! We continued to work on developing our understanding of Iroquois values with Mr. Gardner. Mr.Gardner gave us a rubric to follow to ensure our longhouses contained all the required information. THANK YOU SO MUCH to students and parents who have already supported our Stuff A Cup service project. We are on our way! Please try to send in items before next Friday! Thank you!
