Happy Tuesday! This week is definitely going waaaaaaaay too quickly! We had WOW time today (Work on Work) to move towards completion of our narrative stories and book reports. We had a mini-math lesson BC and AD times in order to help understand how LONG ancient civilizations existed. We watched a video on Ancient Athens that helped us understand the values of the society and their contributions to western civilization.
*Our camp coordinator visited our class today! We are excited!:)) *Last day of school before Spring Break is tomorrow! Please remember that after Spring Break, we have school on Monday, April 3. We leave for outdoor school on April 4!! Happy Monday!
We have a short and busy week this week! Book reports and narrative stories are both due Wednesday. Remember to work at home on these if you need the extra time! We have some time slotted for Tuesday and Wednesday to continue working on both these items. Tomorrow afternoon, we will have a presentation from our Outdoor School coordinator. This will allow students to become more familiar with the experience they have and ask any questions they may wonder. We started discussing key people and histories in Canada, including the influence of Ancient Athens in our society today. We watched a video clip and learned some similarities and differences between democracy in Athens and ours, in Canada, today. Happy Thursday!
Sorry for not having a blog up the past couple of days! Mrs. W was away yesterday and the other one was mid-post! This has been a quick week! We worked on identifying 3 different types of sentences in order to enhance our own writing. We learned the difference between simple, compound and complex sentences. Students have two pages of Word Work to complete for TOMORROW! We also spent some time on IRIS documenting our learning from Science School. Parents, feel free to explore with your child. Grade 6s are starting Planet/Sky Science Research projects. Reminders: *IRP book report due next Wednesday. *Narrative stories due no later than next Wednesday. *Word Work pages on different types of sentences are DUE TOMORROW. *Tomorrow is St.Patrick's Day! Remember to wear green! We are still reminiscing about our fabulous week at Science School! Science School focuses on the 4C's of learning: collaboration, courage, commitment and curiosity, with our honorary 5th "C" ~ creativity. Students are working on a sketchbook page that demonstrates where they implemented these skills throughout the week. This page is DUE TOMORROW as we will be recording our ideas in IRIS.
A look ahead: We have two on-going assignments that need to be wrapped up before Spring Break: 1) Narrative stories - we will have class time to work on and complete these this week and next week. 2) IRP - The book report portion of the IRP project is due before Spring Break. We will also have class time for this assignment but if students are welcome to work on the assignment at home, as well, if extra time is required. We had another fabulous day exploring, experimenting and creating at Telus Spark today! We met with a computer technology fashion designer this morning who shared with us her creations and inventions. She creates wearable technology!! We learned about 'Little Bits' and had the opportunity to create prototypes of our own designs. "Space Next," the dome show, challenged us to think about space travel and the possibilities of landing on Mars! A big thanks again to our volunteers! We're looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, as well!
We had a fantastic first day at Science School! We spent the morning exploring in Open Studio. For our lunch break, we had the chance to amuse ourselves at the Brainasium! This afternoon, we participated in the new Star Trek exhibit!! Ask us about it! We had so much fun! The students sketched and recorded their observations throughout the day. Our lead instructors both commented what a detailed, informative job they were doing in recording their observations! Great work Room 6! You are AWESOME! We are looking forward to day two tomorrow!
Here are some of our reflections from the day: "The 3D printer was cool" "I like how we had watches that scanned at the Star Trek exhibit" "I liked the Star Trek exhibit and all the quizzes to find our character traits and well-suited job" "I liked how creative we could be at the Open Studio" "It was great having an INTERACTIVE day exploring at the exhibits" "I enjoyed the project-making you could do at the station where the tubes blew up air and you could create fabric devices (Fabric and Flying)." "I had fun playing at the brainasium" "The brainasium challenged me by facing my fears" "I need gloves tomorrow for the Brainasium! (It was cold)" "It was challenging climbing up to the 63 foot slide" "The best part of my day was observing the sand-drawing robot" "The best part of my day was taking apart a radio" "The best part of my day was making a weird stop-motion animation video" "The best part of my day was the target practice at the tactical station for Star Trek" "My favorite part of the day was making a stop-motion animation with my friends" What a quick week this has been! Unfortunately Counsellor Demong was not able to visit us this morning, but his assistant Devin Elkin presented to the Grade 5/6s. This was a good opportunity to have an expert in our class to discuss and ask questions about local government.
*Parents, please ensure all forms are returned TOMORROW. We leave Monday at 8:45am to Science School. Please remember to send your child with a healthy garbage-free lunch, waterbottle and appropriate clothing (we will be outdoors at some point) next week! *For our parent volunteers: You are welcome to ride the bus with us! If you prefer to drive to Telus Spark, we also have a parking code that you can use. If you could let us know your means of transportation, that would be great! Thank you! [email protected] *Remember to read your IRP book! The reading is OVERDUE! *Grade 5/6's, please make sure you are prepared to give Councillor Demong a wonderful welcome tomorrow. You should come prepared with a minimum of 5 questions you would like to ask him related to local (municipal) government. Remember, think of questions that DO NOT have a yes/no answer!
*Our Grade 6s had their Wilma Hansen tour this morning! *We are working on editing our writing for full sentences. This morning we did a mini-lesson on subject and predicate. We worked on identifying these in sentences. I will touch base with the 6s on this tomorrow! *We continue to work on our narratives. Although we know it's important to get our ideas down, we have also discussed, as a class, the importance of building GOOD habits. This includes making PROPER capitalization, spelling and punctuation a habit! *PLEASE REMEMBER TO RETURN ALL FIELD TRIP FORMS - TELUS SPARK - (2 forms - pink and white), OUTDOOR SCHOOL and Parent Volunteer forms for Telus Spark (pink). Thank you!! *IRP! Remember to read your book! *In looking ahead to next week for Telus Spark, students need to remember a healthy snack and lunch, indoor shoes and water bottle. |
